Denys

Denys plays Kaval, that is the Bulgarian flute, cumbus,  that is a Turkish fretless banjo, various reed instruments,  and spoons.  He plays with the Pittsburgh Bulgarian  Women's Ensemble, now called Zvesda, and with Turku,  a Turkish and Eurasian music band.

Denys has also played Bulgarian and International music  at various festivals and theatrical productions with the  Bulgarian-Macedonian Educational and Cultural Center  dancers and with the Pittsburgh International Folk Theatre.

"I especially like playing for improvisational and belly dance styles.  Most of all, I like playing outdoors during summer in the evening  for dancers around a golden fire.  The mood comes, people  loosen up, and the muses seem to command.  Here is a haiku  triad that I hope recreates these sensations.

hear

Boom Boom Pounding Drums
jiggle jaggle   Zaghareet,
Yu-lu-lu-lu-lu

see

orange flames pushing up
bleeding sun   pours between leaves
liquid, dancers flow

feel

short gaze, I see her
narrowing eyes   curling lips
smile, caressing me
