            About the books
  • Coptic binding
    • Coptic binding is an older technique that loops binding thread around itself to create an interesting "braided" binding
    • Coptic bound books lie flat when open
    • Thread binding is visible on the front cover
    • The book consists of several signatures (folded groupings of pages) -- usually an odd number
    • Usually hardbound and perfect for journals, sketchbooks
    • Do not expand easily for addition of photos (but perfect for small mementos glued in)
  • Stab binding
    • Stab binding is so-called because the needle "stabs" through sheets of paper to form a binding
    • Often sewed in intricate patterns as an aesthetic look
    • The book is made up of a soft cover (usually thick paper) and sheets of internal paper bound in a "flip book" style
    • Particularly lovely with textured handmade papers as a cover
    • Great for journal, sketchbook, wedding signature album
    • Do not expand easily for addition of photos
  • Case binding
    • Standard "book" -- like a library hardcover (available with a sleeve or box for storage)
    • Usually has endpapers (decorative paper at the front and back of the book)
    • Hardcover, and good for wedding albums, journal
    • Do not expand easily for addition of photos
  • Post binding
    • Hard or softcover binding, with flat internal pages
    • Front cover often has a hinge for easier access
    • Easily expandable as a photo album or artist's sketchbook
    • Usually bound with steel screw posts
    • Makes a great wedding memento album or scrapbook
  • Ring binding
    • Similar to post binding except bound with rings
    • VERY easy to expand, and can add pages if necessary
  • Types of paper
    • Watercolor: usually used as decorative accents or inside paper in special occasions -- it is very stiff and does not bend easily at all -- great for artist sketchbooks
    • Rice paper: very thin, delicate paper (usually Japanese) that looks like leaves -- ink bleeds easily
    • Plain white: acid-free white sketch paper, perfect for writing, drawing, whatever
  • Other types of materials
    • Leather: some bindings and covers are made of high-quality leather
    • Waxed threads: bindings are sewn with waxed linen thread for extra strength
